Next-generation Getter Technology for Vacuum Insulated Panels

NineSigma representing a Fortune 200 manufacturing company, invites proposals for next-generation getter materials for use in vacuum insulated panels.


NineSigma’s client wants to manufacture a vacuum insulated panel (VIP) with long-term durability and performance.  The insulating value of a VIP relies on maintaining vacuum within the panel over the life of the product.  Chemical getters are an effective method for maintaining that vacuum.

Anticipated Project Phases or Project Plan

Phase 1 – Proof of concept

•   Provide samples for client evaluation and testing

Phase 2 – Engineering development

•   Optimise implementation of material in client product design

Criteria for Moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2

NineSigma’s client will consider a successful demonstration of physical performance with acceptable economics and pathway for commercialisation for advancement.


Key Success Criteria - The successful technology will:

  • Maintain <1 mbar vacuum pressure inside a VIP for 15 years
  • Be compatible with fumed silica, glass fibre, polyurethane foam, polystyrene foam, or other core materials commonly used in the VIP industry
  • Preferably have low thermal conductivity, below 0.2 W/(m∙K)
  • Use materials with an acceptable environmental, health, and safety (EHS) profile
  • Optionally, be restored to original performance after a regeneration cycle, if the process is efficient and cost effective

Possible Approaches

Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:

  • Surface treatment
  • Getters and desiccants in the shape of tablets or powders to be mixed with core materials
